Meet Jason
Maker / Creator

Jason Schiedel is a Canadian artist from Waterloo, Ontario. He studied fine art, earning an undergraduate degree in Sculpture/Installation from the Ontario College of Art, and an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Jason worked in a wide variety of media before centering his practice in clay, where he found a material rich for exploring the subjects of intimacy, relationships, and connection.

Jason’s approach to ceramics is largely self-taught, enhanced with workshops on mould making and design with such notable artist teachers as Angelo di Petta and Peter Pincus. In 2019 Jason participated in Fusion’s Creative Directions program, a year-long mentorship that supported eight participants in the development of a deeper understanding of the technical and conceptual underpinnings of their work.

At the heart of Jason’s exploration in clay is a fascination with the vessel form. A potent reflection of the human viewer, a vessel elevates the function of holding into an act of expression, communicating directly what it is like to have a body and to share space with others. Jason founded the artisanal design brand Region of Plenty in 2020 to produce vessels of quality and distinction. Drawing upon a love of art history, forms found in nature, and the body in motion, Region of Plenty is home to functional ceramic sculpture that brings individuals together in contemplation and feeling.
